Your Work For Next Week
Today in class we worked together to take on a large-scale reporting format (also, we enjoyed the weather). For next week, you’ll take some of the mobile reporting strategies you devised today, and tools we discussed the class before spring break, and you’ll make your own mobile report.
• Build your own mobile report on a subject of your choosing. This can be the documentation of a one-time event, or it can be a multi-day report. The key is that it’s mobile and that it’s your reporting.
• Choose a tool we discussed in the class before break. You can combine tools or stick with a single one. Obviously a tool like Posterous allows for all sorts of media to be posted, so choosing one tool doesn’t necessarily restrict you to one storytelling format.
• Choose a subject for your report. Focus it and choose something for which mobile will be a strength.
• Build it, report it, and link it here.
My report was on the Mercadito DIY Craft Fair at the Rumble Arts Center, which took place on the afternoon of Saturday, April 3. My understanding was that it was going to be a craft fair of artists from Humboldt Park. What I didn’t know was that it was also going to feature performances from groups that utilize the space, including the AWESOME demonstration from the Dojo Del Nino kung fu group, where a bunch of little kids displayed their techniques with swords, fans, and some straight-up double dragon stuff. Upstairs, I appropriately spotted an original painting juxtaposing Sho’ Nuff of “The Last Dragon” and Bruce Lee. There was also dancing, a puppet show, and lots of awesome stuff for sale. I captured the event using photography and updated a Tumblr page as I went along.

I decided to live tweet a full ride on a CTA Bus. I started at one end of the line and rode it all the way. I did it around 5pm and kept the bus line confidential to avoid breaking any laws or just generally pissing the CTA off.
I also did it on a separate Twitter feed so I didn’t overload anyone’s feeds.
Here’s the finished project. http://twitter.com/Terrible_Things
These pictures were taken in Downers Grove, IL. On April 5, 2010. Around 12a.m. a fire broke out in an apartment complex which left 33 people homeless. I so happened to be in the area with my boyfriend who was covering this story for a class assignment. I thought it would be interesting to take photos of the complex & area, amongst fire fighters, reporters and people who where trying to figure out what happened.

My report was my mother being in chicago for Easter weekend. I utilized the same techniques as the “chi70″ assignment, and i added a piece from posterous. I found this way to be the easiest when on the go, and i think it worked out fairly well… I did more tweeting than anything, as it was the most accessible when on the go…

I posted live coverage of the preview kickoff for Manifest 2010. The photos and information are on a posterous blog I created for the event:

Oh, an aggravating thing I couldn’t figure out how to fix: I update posterous via email from my phone (obviously). At the bottom of all of the email I send from my phone, it automatically adds “Sent from My Verizon Wireless Blackberry.” This is aggaravating enough in personal emails, but I really don’t want it at the end of every blog post. Does anyone with a Blackberry know how to change this?
I reported the box-scores of three Columbia Renegades baseball games that took place this weekend in Champagne Ill…. it was an embarrassing showing.

I covered the manifest kickoff today.
My tweets are here: http://andyhannon.tumblr.com/post/503892620/manifest-preview-2010
I also used geolocation to check in and see who was there: http://bit.ly/d2NFhK
I used my posterous account to basically mobile blog my walk through the Graceland Cemetery.

The one problem I had with this was that my posts kept going to my other Posterous account… so the sequencing of photos isn’t quite as I wanted it.
(I stupidly forgot to post this before class)
Mine was about observances when I was taking a certain mode of transpertation, or just en route by foot.
I used a Twitter hashtag (which was a terrible idea) and a Tumblr blog:

Most of the action is from the Twitter widget. Here’s the hashtag search:

I used Posterous to document the April 7th Chicago Blackhawks vs. St. Louis Blues game. I posted the link below.
